Nutrition Counseling for Prediabetes
What Is Prediabetes?
Prediabetes is a common condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be considered diabetes. While over 100 million Americans have prediabetes, 8 out of 10 don’t know it.¹
You may see the term prediabetes in your medical chart, but it may be listed as impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, or hyperglycemia. Your provider may say that you are “borderline” or that your sugar is a little high.
Many people think prediabetes simply means they're at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. While that's true, prediabetes is also associated with an increased risk of heart disease,²˒³ making early intervention especially important.
Why Meet With a Dietitian for Prediabetes?
Prediabetes is a reversible condition, but it does require effort to do so. Changing your diet and exercise has been shown to improve prediabetes outcomes more than medication can!³˒⁴
The American Diabetes Association recommends people with prediabetes get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise and lose at least 5-7% of their body weight.³ Meeting with a dietitian has been shown to help people do just this.³ We educate, guide, and cheer you on through the process.
People with prediabetes who meet with a dietitian are able to lower fasting blood sugar levels as well as decrease weight, waist circumference, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.⁵˒⁶
