Fatty Liver Disease (MASLD/MASH) Nutrition Counseling

What Is Fatty Liver Disease?

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is often referred to simply as “fatty liver disease.” It is estimated that 25-38% of Americans have the disease,¹˒² and many individuals are unaware that they have the condition. It generally does not cause any symptoms.¹

Fatty liver disease occurs when too much fat builds up in the liver. In some people, this can cause inflammation and scarring over time. In some people, MASLD can progress to MASH, a more serious form of the disease that causes inflammation and liver damage. MASH can lead to fibrosis (scarring), cirrhosis, and, in some cases, liver cancer.³

MASLD is closely associated with conditions such as overweight and obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol and triglycerides, sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease.⁴

Treatments for Fatty Liver Disease

Unfortunately, there are limited medical treatments specifically for MASLD, and lifestyle changes are the mainstay of management of the disease. There are currently two FDA-approved medications specifically for MASH with moderate-to-advanced liver fibrosis, being Rezdiffra® and Wegovy®.⁵

The mainstays of MASLD treatment include weight management, a healthy eating pattern, regular physical activity, and management of related conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.⁵ Alcohol intake should also be addressed.⁵ Treatment of obesity through bariatric surgery and/or other weight management medications as well as using some other medications off-label can also be a part of the treatment plan.

Why Meet With a Dietitian for Liver Disease?

Because lifestyle changes are a cornerstone of MASLD treatment, and there are limited medication options, getting professional guidance and support for weight loss and healthy lifestyle changes can be particularly valuable.

Our dietitians can help you develop a realistic eating and exercise plan that supports weight loss, improves metabolic health, and fits your individual needs and preferences.
