Your Grocery Budget: Food Stamps

May 28, 2019

Sometimes, no matter how many sales you chase, or how many coupons you clip, it seems impossible to make ends meet and still buy an adequate amount of food to feed the whole household. Luckily, help is available!

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, SNAP for short, previously known as “food stamps”, is a government assistance program designed to help individuals and families stay healthy by being able to purchase nutritious foods.

SNAP benefits are put on an EBT card, similar to a debit card. With this money, you can buy most foods and even seeds and plants to grow your own food. You are NOT able to buy things like alcohol, cigarettes, pet food, household supplies, paper products, vitamins and medicines, and hot foods that are meant to be consumed immediately (i.e. buying a slice of hot pizza at Wegmans). Most grocery stores, and even some gas stations and convenience stores take SNAP. There is no need to separate your SNAP eligible items from the rest; your cashier will swipe your EBT card first and then will tell you the balance for everything that was no eligible.
