Kumqauts: Nature's Sour Patch Kids

April 30, 2019

If you’re an adventurous eater, you have to try kumquats! They are small citrus fruits that are sweet and oh-so-sour. It’s difficult to eat them with a straight face and my mouth is watering just thinking about them! Oh, and you eat the rind as well. Weird, right?

These little guys are generally found in the grocery store from early winter to late spring. They’re found in the produce section, but in the plastic clam shells instead of loose like some other fruits. Wash them well as you eat the entire fruit (spit out the seeds if you’d like of course). Kumquats are best enjoyed by eating them whole. The rind is actually the sweet part, so it’s good to take a big bite as you’ll get the sweet and sour flavors all together. Feel free to cut them up and put on a salad, though.

In terms of nutrition, they contain LOTS of fiber! They also have lots of vitamin C like other citrus fruits. The peel even contains a small amount of omega-3 fatty acids, which isn’t typical of fruits.
